It is vital to recognize stroke symptoms when they occur. During a typical stroke, 1.9 million neurons, 14 billion synapses, and 7.5 miles of nerve fibers die every minute. There are treatments available for certain types of stroke to help stop the damage and restore blood flow, but those treatments can only be used within the first hours of the stroke. So urge everyone to learn the symptoms, to recognize stroke, and to BE FAST!
Prevent stroke before
Strokes can be absolutely devastating. However, according to the American Stroke Association, as many as 80% of strokes are preventable. For example, high blood pressure is the number one cause of stroke so controlling blood pressure is very important for the brain. There are other things, too, that are important for preventing strokes from happening.
Three types of stroke
There are three major types of stroke
Ischemic - these are caused by a blood clot or collapsed blood vessel
Hemorrhagic - these are bleeding strokes
TIA - Transient Ischemic Attack. Some people have referred to them as "mini-strokes", but this is deceiving. Even though the symptoms of a TIA disappear, it is a warning sign that a large stroke could be coming.
Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in men.
